Cultural Black-hole?

No, I haven’t watched any of the 10 TV-Drama shows produced in Kuwait this Ramadan. I’ve completely depended on the popular views and reviews of you all, along with what I heard from friends.

Yet, it’s striking how officials in Kuwait continue to glamorize those who know nothing about Art! And continuously and systematically sabotage any serious artistic initiatives!!!

I don’t mean TV only.
Film,
Music,
Theatre,
Painting,
Poetry…etc

It’s a shame that people like Amer Zuhair get no recognition by the government (worse yet, he gets a pretty stamp on his beautiful movie forbidding him from public shows). On the other hand, a @#*& self-claimed writer like Fajr Al Sa3eed gets a “Thank You Letter” lemu7arabat el fashad!

It’s frustrating that someone like Soliman El Bassam, recognized by the British, as one of the best 10 young directors for theatre (Thank you Bunaz for the info), while Kuwait (again the government) didn't bother to even attend his play! (3atooh ja2eza tashjee3ya 3an el 3ain)!

Oh and don’t get me started on “المجلس الوطني للثقافة والفنون والآداب”…
Who supposedly is responsible for growing cultural awareness in Kuwait and yet, doesn’t have the budget for a decent advertisement in the paper for its activities. (shorouq la tzi3leen)

Why?
What are they so afraid of?
Why is it that they fully adopt the likes of “d3ai el khalifa”, and completely disregard “3anbar waleed” ?

Do they actually have enough brain cells to know that those potential artists will eventually give up or go away?

Do you think they have enough strategic planners to know that such level of cultural sophistication can yield better and smarter Kuwaities?

Am I paranoid? Or is this a systematic methodology to destruct any artistic potential we might have?

Our constitution says:

Hi there,

Great post! 3nbar Waleed and Sami Mo7mad are my favourite ever! And unfrotunately examples of systematic Govermenatal abuse. Sami for example, has not been reconized and supported till he gave up serious art and began doing patterns and wall decor!

There is a powerful effort to damage any serious art because they know the value and effect of real art!

Yet, there is room for private business to adopt artist and artwork as a form of social duty. But the private sctor in Kuwait still lack the maturity for such step.

Thank you for a great post!

ummel3yal,

i love them both very much :-)
3nbar too turned funny after giving up.

For the private sector to adopt work, they need to be a certain level to distinguish between what's "hayef" and what's not. ya3ni they need education and awareness. Where is that going to come from?

o 7ayyach allah anytime :-p

i dont recognize the names, but i think the exact same thing can be said in regards sports and athleticism

now, "art" is said to be the mirror for the peak of society .. if that is true, then the lack of support for artistic talent would make perfect sense because "our" 'society' seems to have a thing for being a monochromatic state (as in state of mind, la7ad yero7 b3eed)
i like to call it: Everlasting Greenism if you're catching my drift

temi,

you're right about sports! men talal ela yousif el jasim w ya albi la te7zan!

I'm sure you wouldn't know the names if yor're not seriously interested in those things and really dig to find them. That's the real shame in the whole issue :-(

Baldisar,

Now that I have read what you write, I am ashamed to write in Arabic lol

You are also an excellent example of a talented writer who isn't published :-(

Since this is our constitutional right, why don't we do something about it?

where is 3anbar waleed !
and why would you compare d3aij alkhaleefa to 3anbar ? shouldnt you compare an apple to an apple ?

UmmEl3yal said...

Fuzzy,

Yes, where is he? Last I heard of him, he had an art institite where he teaches children and amatures. Not sure about that though.

What a real waste of his talent. I really love that guy!

fuzzy,

well, all I know about him is that he's alive. I saw a comment for him in Al Qabas a couple of months ago.

I'm not comparing 3anbar to nono. I'm just showing the irony of our wonderful system.

adri sorry. The purpose is for us to take action.

ghaseema
lol i loved your comment!
You're absolutely right though... only how did she become an actor to begin with?

Excellent spot, Im with you 100% - we have some great creative people in Kuwait who would have thrived and become stars elsewhere.

I mean look at Al-Mutawa, a Kuwaiti who The Washington Post first heralded when he created 'The 99' - at that time no tv, no KUNA, no press, no one here was interested in the guy and he was making deals with Marvel Comics and DC comics and creating the world's first Moslim superheros. It's very sad that someone like him has to rely on his marketing team to get press in a country like Kuwait.

And we have many, many more like him, male and female, all demographics, all ages, designers, actors, directors, journalists etc - they are not appreciated here. Some of that has to do with the right wing extremist hold here that shuns culture and entertainment.

Amer,
You're right again!

what about creating an independent entity from those who are genuinly interested? If we all chip in maybe we can create something?

bunaz,
My sincere apologies!!
But then your "EL" is lam el shamsyya lol so there goes the pronounciation :-)

DR,
Himmetich ma3ana let's change this!

Don't get me started.

And I don't think you're paranoid at all.

I think it's time the private sector does something about that. By private sector I mean individual efforts & financing by people like us. Would that be so hard?

Shame on us. It's our responsibility too.
